Remember every
Chinese character

“I was stunned by the improvements in character retention.”

- Nataniel Chan, Oxford

The Zizzle method

Chinese isn't hard — it's just taught wrong

Most methods ask you to repeat characters until they stick. Zizzle makes each one genuinely memorable from the first time you see it. Here's how.

1 Meaning

Characters look like what they mean

Many Chinese characters started life as pictures. Zizzle makes that connection visible — so the shape of the character tells you what it means before you've even studied it.

Tree illustration TREE 木
Gate illustration GATE 门
2 Pronunciation

The sound is hiding in a word you already know

Each pinyin maps to a familiar English "linkword" that contains the Chinese sound. You already know how to say it - you just need to spot it in the scene.

means tree · pronounced · sounds like MOON

MOOn written on the moon in the story scene
3 Tone

Five heroes, one for each tone

Mandarin has four tones plus a light tone — and getting them wrong changes the meaning entirely. Zizzle gives each tone its own recurring hero character. Spot the hero in a story, and you instantly know the tone.

4 Composition

Complex characters are built from simpler ones

Zizzle breaks every character into its components. Once you know the parts, you can decode new characters you've never seen — and the stories become much easier to remember.

5 Memorable stories

Everything comes together in one scene

Each character gets its own illustrated story that weaves together its meaning, sound, and tone hero - so you remember all three at once, not separately.

A stick through a rock in the middle

A stick was in the MIDDLE of a rock, representing an ancient riddle.

The Turtle smashing mahjong pieces

The TURTLE pulled out the stick. The rock turned into MAHJONG pieces.

The best way to understand it is to try it yourself.

Testimonials

What learners say

Again and again, I would encounter a new character and stop in disbelief, wondering how anyone could have created an association so unexpectedly perfect. Years later, I still remember characters through the images and stories I first learned in Zizzle.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to download an app?

No. Zizzle runs entirely in your browser at app.zizzle.io. It works on desktop and mobile. Nothing to install.

Is Zizzle free?

HSK 1–2 characters are free, no account required. To unlock nearly 3,000 characters across the full HSK curriculum, upgrade to Pro - choose monthly ($8/mo), annual ($60/yr), or lifetime ($119). Sign up to save your progress and sync your review schedule across sessions.

Why is Zizzle better than just using flashcards?

Plain flashcards rely on rote repetition. Zizzle adds visual stories that make each character memorable from the first exposure, so you spend far less time reviewing the same card over and over.

Which Chinese characters does Zizzle cover?

Zizzle covers nearly 3,000 simplified Chinese characters spanning the full HSK curriculum - HSK 1 through 6, in both the current HSK 2.0 and the new HSK 3.0 deck structures (see our HSK 3.0 guide and the free vocab lists), plus the components and radicals the official lists leave out. Over 1,000 characters have illustrated mnemonic stories, with more added regularly. All characters are covered with vocabulary examples, handwriting training, and spaced repetition.

What study modes are available?

Flashcard mode drives your spaced repetition schedule and rank progress: see the character, recall meaning and pronunciation, then self-grade. Quiz modes are also available: story completion, character-pinyin matching, and handwriting practice.

What is the placement test?

A short adaptive test (about 3 minutes, up to 30 questions) that covers characters from HSK 1 through 6. It stops when you start missing too many and recommends the right starting level for you. You can take it as a guest and save the result by creating a free account.

How do I recommend Zizzle to others?

Zizzle is an independent project. If it has been useful to you, the best support is sharing it with a friend learning Chinese or recommending it to your school or university.
