How it works
Every character is paired with an image that visually captures its meaning. The character for "tree" 木 looks like a tree — we make that connection explicit.
A memorable illustrated story weaves the components of each character into a scene. Stories are far easier to recall than abstract symbols.
The pinyin sound is embedded in the story via a linkword — a familiar English word that sounds like the character. For example, 一 (yī) sounds like "yield".
Each of the four tones has a recurring hero character in the stories. Once you know the heroes, you automatically remember the tone of every character they appear in.
The built-in quiz uses SM-2 spaced repetition to schedule reviews at exactly the right time — so you spend less time studying and remember more, longer.
