The Zizzle method

Chinese isn't hard — it's just taught wrong

Most methods ask you to repeat characters until they stick. Zizzle makes each one genuinely memorable from the first time you see it. Here's how.

1 Meaning

Characters look like what they mean

Many Chinese characters started life as pictures. Zizzle makes that connection visible — so the shape of the character tells you what it means before you've even studied it.

Gate illustration Gate character GATE
Grain illustration Grain character GRAIN
2 Pronunciation

Linkwords hook the sound into memory

Every character's pinyin sound is hidden inside a familiar English word — a linkword. You already know how to say it. Now you just need to spot it.

sounds like HERD
mén sounds like MENTAL
sounds like MOON
3 Tone

Five heroes, one for each tone

Mandarin has four tones plus a light tone — and getting them wrong changes the meaning entirely. Zizzle uses five recurring hero characters in every story. Spot the hero, and you know the tone.

Turtle — 1st tone (flat, like singing)

Fox — 2nd tone (rising, like climbing)

Dragon — 3rd tone (dips down then up)

Bulldog — 4th tone (sharp, falling)

Bamboo — 5th (light, neutral)

Turtle — 1st tone Fox — 2nd tone Dragon — 3rd tone Bulldog — 4th tone Bamboo — 5th tone
4 Composition

Complex characters are built from simpler ones

Zizzle breaks every character into its components. Once you know the parts, you can decode new characters you've never seen — and the stories become much easier to remember.

5 Memorable stories

Everything comes together in one scene

Each character gets its own illustrated story that weaves together its meaning, sound, and tone hero — so you remember all three at once, not separately.

Woman character scene

The WOMAN wanted to order food at the restaurant.

Dragon character scene

But the DRAGON waiter gave her a French MENU.

The Dragon tells you it's 3rd tone. "MENU" gives you the sound. The scene locks in the meaning.

The best way to understand it is to try it yourself.

What is the placement test?

A short adaptive test (about 3 minutes, up to 30 questions) that covers characters from HSK 1 through 6. It stops when you start missing too many and recommends the right starting level for you. You can take it as a guest and save the result by creating a free account.

How do I recommend Zizzle to others?

Zizzle is an independent project. If it has been useful to you, the best support is sharing it with a friend learning Chinese or recommending it to your school or university.
